Joseph Gordon-Levitt has made a big splash in the Indie movie scene with his films, 500 Days Of Summer, Brick and Mysterious Skin. The problem is that he doesn't like that only a select few get to participate in movies and television the way that he has. What is he going to do about it? He is going to produce your movie.
About 5 years ago Gordon-Levitt started a website called
hitRECord.org for the purpose of sharing some videos that he made. Since then a community of writers, artists, photographers, directors and much more has formed into a unique creative force. The idea behind the website is anyone can put up a "Record." This can be text, pictures, songs, drawings, films or really anything you can upload onto the internet. The community then can download your "Record" and "Re-Record" it in any way. For example someone can take a written story and animate it, then someone can add live scenes to that animation and another person can add music to bring the "Record" to life. This has been going on for many years now and this unique group of people are ready to take the next step.
On January 4th 2010 Joseph Gordon-Levitt turned
hitRECord.org into a full fledged money making production company. The idea is to pick out some of the "Records" and then using his connections turn these into money making ventures. He wants to make movies, publish literature, create graphic art, make music, curate live events, create a TV show and build a space for to use as a venue for cinema and performance and a studio for production.
How will this work? Every once in a while Gordon-Levitt will hand pick a "Record" and use his position in the established media industry to turn it into a money making production. If the "Record" is successful then the profit, after costs, will be split half to hitRECord.org LLC and half to anyone who participated in creating the "Record."
The first big test for this production company will happen on January 21st at Sundance Film Festival. There will be a Venue set up for some "Records" to be created over the ten day festival. People can add pieces in their booth or from anywhere in the world on their website. At the end of the Festival some of these "Records" will then be screened to the Sundance audience. This could be a good first glimpse of the direction the company will be taking.
For more information you can visit the site
hitRECord.org. And while you are there you can upload a "Record."
