Motion Picture, still being one of the youngest art forms around, has been dissected, torn, twisted, and mummified. And yesterday, in a conversation with a small group of video/film students A question was asked. When considering motion picture within the concept of time and space, what depends on the other the most? After a long conversation, this is what I finally arrived at.

Time and Space is relative to the eye of the editor, who chooses to create space with in the time you watch a film, while having the film's time and space fluctuate, leading the viewer to experience an illusion of time. Therefore the space, time has, is non-existent.

Which of course, answered nothing.

When editing, Does time depend on space? Or does Space depend on time. Or are they dependent on each other?

It is all relative according to the observer. Cinema is on of the most voyeuristic forms of entertainment. The camera becomes your eyes and shows you what is interesting and what to think about.

I would say space is more pertinent/relevant. Being disembodied while viewing the silver screen forces spectators to place themselves in an space and become apart of the narrative, a "fly on the wall". Time can be used to make spectators question the space their in. Ellipse can throw you off and make you question your surroundings and the truths you observe. Just look at flash backs.
