I am not a Marine, but I imagine that they follow a code of conduct that 'is becoming of a Marine'. In other words, their thoughts, actions, plans and conduct is referenced against 'being a Marine'. There actions, then, are seen as Marine or not Marine - and I imagine they would think in terms of conduct that either honors or taints the honor of the Marines.
