Students awareness of Careers in New Media

I teach Communication Law and Ethics at De Paul to graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Communications. My students are very familiar with new media on a personal level - most use it every day in one format or another. We also cover new media legal issues in class.

However, when asked about career goals, most of the students don't mention new media. They mention traditional career paths such as advertising and PR agencies, or corporate PR.

Do other educators find this to be true?

Students often fail to realize the full options of careers paths they can consider before graduation.

I guess my questions are do students realize that new media careers are even an option? Do they know job titles and where they can go to keep up with the new job trends?

Hi All, I oversee the majority of career services at DePaul and I can say that in my office we do quite a lot to teach about and connect students with a wide range of digital and social media jobs, organizations and options. We host a Digital Media networking event, bring in various industry people to hire for interns and full time positions. There are several companies who are active in the Convergence who hire from us. There is still a big learning curve for non-computer science students in knowing about things like content development and word of mouth marketing, but we are consistent in showing students where the new, emerging jobs are.
