New Microsoft Ads - What is the deal with Gates and Seinfeld?

I know this appears to be old media but they will obviously be incorporating online ads with the TV ads. There is lots of buzz out there about whether these commercials will be effective. There are also theories about what the commercials are trying to accomplish (What is the deal with Gates and Seinfeld).

Do you think these will be successful?

I tend to believe that Microsoft had to do something big in response to the pounding they are taking the Mac vs PC commercials. Which is translating into more Mac sales. Which could eventually lead to Microsoft losing their grip on the business market.

But I am unsure if these commercials will help break the trend. Only the next commercials will bare this out.

Having never really watched Seinfeld or liked the show I had to have this explained to me and it still doesn't make any sense. See HT's comment at this blog below:
